Nursing, profession that assumes responsibility for the continuous care of the sick, the injured, the disabled and the dying. Nursing is also responsible for encouraging the health of the individuals, families and communities in medical and community settings. Nurses are actively involved in the health care research, management, policy deliberations and patient advocacy. Professional nurses also oversee the work of nursing assistants in various setting. (Advances in health care technology, rising expectation of the people seeking care and reorganization of the health care system require a greater number of highly educated professionals.)

According to the International Council of Nurses (ICN), the scope of nursing practice “encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings.” National nursing associations further clarify the scope of nursing practice by establishing particular practice standards and codes of the ethics.
